SUMMARY
The GPU-5/A Pave Claw is a heavy machine gun pod armed with 30 mm GAU-13/A gatling cannon, a derivative weapon system of 30 mm GAU-8/A Avenger. Developed to provide an equal firepower to the A-10 Thunderbolt II, it was provisioned for fighter jets that require powerful strafing run capability to conduct close air support. Due to its large caliber bullet shared by the Avenger, the Pave Claw's form factor is massive by any gun pod standards. No fighters can withstand both its weight and recoil, and therefore, the GPU-5/A was discontinued shortly after its introduction.
Considering that the GPU-5/A was built based on the GAU-8/A, a gun solely mounted on the A-10 as the only strike aircraft capable of sustaining its force, an expedient project was pitched to retrieve these derelict gun pods and mount them onboard the Warthog. Not only can the A-10 carry an impressive amount of payload, but it was also tested with multiple but lighter 20 mm gun pods at one point. Therefore, the project will additionally involve arming an A-10C with eight (8) GPU-5/A MGP, now assigned as the A-10C Pave Claw Gunship.
