Death Domain Subclass for Clerics

So, remember how Larian reported that Clerics were the least-picked PC class? Well, for my part that might be because they neglected to port my favorite Cleric Subclass from the 5e Core Rulebooks, the Death Domain! So, be the change you want to see in the world, etc, etc.

This is as close to a direct conversion of the 5e DMG Death Domain as I've been able to manage while being brand new to BG3 modding, and a dabbling modder overall at best. Usually more of an enjoyer of mods than a creator of them, so I apologize in advance for any newbie mistakes, and I appreciate any bug reports or feedback!

Thanks and Acknowledgements:

This has been a learning experience, and I wouldn't have been able to get this far without help. I'd especially like to call out the following:

  • Baltavi for letting me implement a version of how he did Reaper in his excellent and far more expansive Cleric Subclasses mod. To be honest, if I knew it existed when I started this project, I probably wouldn't have bothered! But he was also gracious enough to answer a whole bunch of questions I had about how he did his version.
  • IvanWalsh for creating a beautiful new Subclass Icon for this mod!
  • zero3042 for his suggestion in the comments putting me on the right track to solving the Divine Strike bug that was driving me crazy with the initial release.
  • Kingdomyoshi for his Way of the Sun Soul Monk subclass mod. This project started with me poking around Kingdomyoshi's mod to get an idea of what all would need to be included in a subclass mod. Some of his files even had comments in them explaining what was what!
  • Norbyte for the LSLIB Export Tool.
  • ShinyHobo for the Modder's Multitool
  • And the BG3 Wiki's modding resources for getting me started.

Death Domain Features:

Martial Weapon Proficiency: At 1st level, you get Martial Weapon Proficiency.

Domain Spells:
1stFalse Life & Ray of Sickness
3rdBlindness & Ray of Enfeeblement
5thAnimate Dead & Vampiric Touch
7thBlight & Death Ward
9thInsect Plague/Contagion* & Cloudkill

*Insect Plague is the replacement for Antilife Shell, which isn't in BG3, and I have no idea how I'd begin to create it, so I figured Insect Plague was the next best thing for another Area Denial type of spell at the appropriate level. The only other contender was maybe Contagion just for being a 5th level Necromancy spell. Let me know if people would prefer that instead! There are now two versions of this mod, one for people who prefer Insect Plague as the Antilife Shell replacement, and one for people who prefer Contagion. Only one or the other will function, please do not try to install both mods!

Domain Features
Reaper: At 1st level, you learn Bone Chill, the only Necromancy Cantrip in BG3. Normally this feature would let you target a second creature within 5ft of the first as well, but I have no idea how to set that up - instead I'm taking a leaf from Larian's book and following the precedent they set when they turned Acid Splash into a small AoE when it used to have the same restriction. You might be able to catch more than two enemies with it now, but it hopefully balances out with all the friendly fire it causes instead. With gracious permission from Baltavi, I've implemented a variant of how he handled this same problem in his  Cleric Subclasses mod. No more friendly fire, instead Bone Chill will automatically try to hit a second enemy within 7ft of the original target (5ft was a bit small in actual practice, which apparently Larian agreed with given how they made Acid Splash a 7ft AoE too), though it doesn't let you specify which enemy if there's more than one to choose from within range.

Channel Divinity: Touch of Death: Starting at 2nd level, you can use Channel Divinity to destroy another creature's life force by touch. When you hit a creature with a melee attack, you can use Channel Divinity to deal extra necrotic damage to the target. The damage equals 5 + twice your cleric level.

Inescapable Destruction: Starting at 6th level, your ability to channel negative energy becomes more potent. Necrotic damage dealt by you ignores resistance to necrotic damage.

Divine Strike: At 8th level, you gain the ability to infuse your weapon strikes with necrotic energy. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with a weapon attack, you can cause the attack to deal an a 1d8 necrotic damage to the target.*

*Divine Strike is currently bugged in some weird way I haven't been able to figure out such that it will let you double-dip on the Divine Strike damage if you use the dedicated Divine Strike attack button, as it still asks if you want to add the Divine Strike damage as a reaction afterwards. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anyone figures it out please let me know! Fixed now, thanks for the idea zero3042!

Installation:

Now requires ImprovedUI Mod and the ImprovedUI Assets file, as of when the updated version of those goes up tonight (09/09/2023). Using the Baldur's Gate 3 Mod Manager, you should just need to drop the DeathDomain##.pak file in AppData\Local\Larian Studios\Baldur's Gate 3\Mods, then enable it in the Mod Manger and save your Order and you should be all set. Where ## should be either CN or IP depending on if you're using the Contagion or Insect Plague versions for your choice of Domain Spell. Please remove any old versions of DeathDomain.pak that does not have one of those letter codes.
