Variance and Versatility is a mod that overhauls Humans and Half-Elves in a way that seeks to make them more interesting and compelling characters to build mechanically.

Variance and Versatility is a mod that overhauls Humans and Half-Elves in a way that seeks to make them more interesting and compelling characters to build mechanically.  It does this by expanding on ideas found in their 5e Tabletop versions, with Human's new features drawing on Variant Human and Half-Elves' new feature realizing its unique +2/+1/+1 stat spread. In both cases, these races now have a unique and compelling use-case for any build, without superseding existing options or overlapping with each other.

Human Variance (replaces Civil Militia for Humans)
You may select one feature of your choice from this list to express your heritage, upbringing, or other unique traits as a human.

  • Civil Militia: You have Weapon Proficiency with spears, pikes, halberds, and glaives, and Armour Proficiency with Light Armour and Shields. Your Carrying Capacity increases by 25%.
  • Keen Eyes: You can see in the dark up to a range of 6 meters, and you have Proficiency in Perception.
  • Sly: Attacks of Opportunity have Disadvantage against you, and you have Proficiency in Stealth.
  • Hot to Trot: Your first attack in combat deals additional damage equal to your Proficiency Bonus.
  • Military Conditioning: While wearing heavy armour, you gain +1 to Saving Throws.
  • Weavetouched: You gain +1 to Spell Save DC.

Note: Human Versatility no longer provides a 25% increase to Carrying Capacity. This bonus has been moved to the now-selectable Civil Militia for technical reasons.

Dual Heritage (replaces Civil Militia for Half-Elves)
Half-Elves may increase an additional ability score by 1, up to a maximum of 16. If the chosen ability score is increased past 16, this feature will have no effect.

Note: In character creation, selecting an ability score increase that exceeds 16 will show the score increasing by 1. This is only visual. It works as intended once ingame, and your passive WILL BE WASTED.

Installation
Install with BGMM. A new save is required for this mod to work properly. Installing this mod in the middle of a save will simply result in you or your companions not having Civil Militia, the passive that this mod replaces with these new mechanics. Your game won't break, but you will gain very little from having this mod installed, and as far as I know there is no known way to avoid this at the moment, because we do not currently have the ability to respec Racial passive choices.

Additional Notes
For technical reasons, Human companions are defaulted to Civil Militia and Half-Elf companions are defaulted to +1 Constitution. This is due to not being able to respec racial feature selections, so I went with the option that will negatively affect gameplay the least. My apologies for it being like this, but it's the best I can do under the circumstances.

Compatibility
This mod is compatible with any race mods that do not directly modify Half-Elf or Human features. Subrace mods, such as Soriyumi's Orc Half-Elf subrace, are compatible.
