About this mod

Road Builder is a revolutionary mod that allows you to create roads without dealing with the tedious asset editor!

This mod automatically generates the properties, lanes, props, models, and markings of the road based on a configuration created in Thumbnail Maker.

Requirements
Permissions and credits
Donations

  • The external tool used to create road configs (aka Thumbnail Maker) is Windows-only, you can use it on Linux with Wine or Proton for example. But, for MacOS you'll need a Windows VM or even a windows laptop to use Thumbnail Maker on, the roads can be copied to your Mac and used normally.
  • The mod currently only generates the models for the ground & elevated levels, the remaining elevations will be coming soon.
  • It is advised to subscribe to the collection of assets to get the full options of this mod, those extra props are not required for the mod to work.
  • Make use of the Load Order Mod to disable unneeded mods and assets to speed up entering the asset editor. You can export settings to have one for playing the game and one for editing!
  • Adaptive Networks is required for the roads even after you generate them, a lot of mechanics inside the road require AN to work properly

  • Clus, Rev0, Kptr, zirophyz & Pewex for providing models for this mod.
  • Kian, Macsergey & Algernon for their help with the code.

After you've enabled the mod, you can go to the road editor to get started.

Be aware that some mods do not work well in the editor. So you will need to either disable most of your assets or use Load Order Mod to easily filter which mods & assets you want to use.
Once you're ready, follow these steps:
  • Go to Editors > Asset Editors > New (or Load) > Select a Theme
  • Select the Roads category
  • Select any road from the list, this is just a formality of the in-game editor and has no effect on your final road
  • You should see the Road Builder menu at the top left

If you haven't yet, open the Thumbnail Maker app to create your road configurations first, then you can use the Build button to generate those roads.

Thumbnail Maker is the external tool used to create road configurations, you can have it open at any time, even if the game is not running.
You can easily open it while in the editor with its designated button on the top-left. You can also find it in this folder:%LocalAppData%\Colossal Order\Cities_Skylines\RoadBuilder\Thumbnail Maker

Creating a road configuration
  • Use the "Add Lane" button to add and configure the lanes you want on your road
  • Each lane will have its own direction, size, decorations, etc.
  • You can mix multiple "Lane Types" inside one lane to create "Shared" lanes, like Cars & Bikes
  • You can add a stop to filler lanes to make it into a center platform for example
  • You can move a lane up or down using the grabber, useful to move a lane onto the sidewalk for example

Once your road is ready, click on export to be able to see it in the editor and generate it.

Tips & Tricks
  • The buffer size is the distance between the outermost lanes and the curb
  • If you specify the total width of the road, the sidewalks will expand to match that width
  • Hover over items to show their tooltips, explaining what each element does
  • Check out the options panel for extra customizations
  • You can go to the Theme Changer page from the options panel, or by right-clicking the top bar. Theme Changer allows you to switch between multiple themes like Dark Mode & change the scale of the app's UI
  • Right-click a tag in the roads panel to exclude roads that have this tag

Once you’re finished, click on the Export button on the right to send it over to the in-game editor to be imported.

Transit stops
  • Pedestrian lanes include a transit stop by default, adding one to those lanes will only let people waiting for the stop to use it instead of being able to just walk on that lane.
  • You can add a transit stop to a filler lane in its lane properties.
  • The mod will try looking for lanes like tram, car & bus that are adjacent to a pedestrian/filler lane to add a stop for them.
  • The game will always choose the closest pedestrian lane to use for a stop

Interactions
  • Removing pedestrian lanes from the sidewalk will disable people from walking there
  • Trees at the center of the road automatically go away when there's a stop, and you can hide the ones close to the intersection with AN
  • Grass fillers turn into Pavement fillers when there's a stop on them or by toggling them using AN
  • Traffic lights are placed on fillers that have "drivable vehicle" lanes next to them
  • Adding fillers next to tram lanes will add a support pole on it instead of the poles on the sidewalks
  • Parking & Empty lanes can be used as bus stop bays
  • Manually placing a streetlight will disable the automatic ones from being added

Reversible tram stops
To create a reversible tram stop that you can use with the Reversible Tram AI, mark the tram lane as bi-directional.
Note: We’ve noticed the reversible tram AI mod gets a little weird when you string together a bunch of reversible tram roads, so keep that in mind. Not something we can fix.
