Installation
Prerequisites
- Locate the game directory in your system, typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Max Payne.
- Download DSOAL and extract the dsound.dll, dsoal-aldrv.dll, and alsoft.ini files into the game directory where the main executable is located.
- Download the desired localization from Files tab.
- Open the downloaded 7z file and extract one of the following files into the game directory:
- MP1_Full_[xx-XX].mpm — for fully localized texts and dialogues.
- MP1_TextOnly_[xx-XX].mpm — for localized texts with original English dialogues.
There are two methods to load the mod:
Manually
- Launch the game through Steam.
- In the game launcher, go to Choose Customised Content and select the localization MPM file.
- Finally, click "Play".
- In the game directory, rename the .mpm file extension to .ras.
- Launch the game through Steam and click "Play".
Differences from Max Payne (1) Language Files
Unlike Darkje's work, this repack mod doesn't require moving the x_data.ras and x_english.ras files to another directory. In fact, those files are needed for the localization mod to work.
The audio quality remains as the original, in Microsoft ADPCM, avoiding the quantization noise introduced by the Language Files' soundpatch due to the audio conversion to Unsigned 8-bit PCM
Also, the graphic novel textures were slightly improved by using the FBCNN A.I. model to remove the JPG compression artifacts.
For now, there are no plans to add fan-made localizations. I highly recommend Darkje's Language Files for that.
