"Having read this far, you may be shocked at the strength of my words, and the literacy of a northern "savage." Aye, many Nords can both read and write. My father began my instruction in the way of letters when I was but a bairn, as did his father, and his father before him."

- Hrothmund Wolf-Heart, Nords of Skyrim.
"And I vowed that henceforth all Men would record their ideas and thoughts, just as Shor carved a record of his victory over Sneggh into the side of Shivering Glacier. And in this way would the best ways of killing Elves be preserved."

- Ysgramor, Songs of the Return, Volume 1
"Let me show you then, the proper way to ask the Nords their proper place in history: ask them to tell you the oldest story they know that's also the best."

- Michael Kirkbride, On the Nords' Lack of a Creation Myth.

Old Holds

Old Holds is a mod series designed to give more character and distinction to the Holds of The Pale, Winterhold, Eastmarch and The Rift, collectively known as the Old Holds. Inspired mainly by the previous conceptions of Skyrim and the Nords, the series aims to bring noticeable aesthetic, cultural, political and religious differences and make the region stand out from the more Imperialised Western Holds.

Old Holds - Library of the Nords

If you've seen my other mod No Modern Books in Old Ruins you know I have a dislike for arbitrarily added books. I think books should to a sense of immersion and world building, and the books placed should reflect their owners. This mod replaces books in the Old Holds with those of "Nord interest" such as histories, songs, geography, bestiaries and poetry. I made a pool of such books from the vanilla list, mixed in some lore friendly ones from ESO and Project Tamriel and added a few of my own, currently totaling 100 new books!

If we take our favourite Nordy Nord, Jarl Ulfric's vanilla library as an example, he's got on his shelf a book on Khajiit mercenaries, a Breton intrigue, a book on Daedra and a book on Red Eagle. Random! These have been changed to the full set of the Songs of Return (including the ones from ESO), a history of Skyrim in its prime and a book of old Nord proverbs.

The homes of the Dunmer in Windhelm were also changed to give them books more suited to their culture with some of the books from the Dragonborn DLC in use. Locations such as the Thieves Guild headquarters or the College of Winterhold weren't included.

This mod includes and so supersedes my older mod
Words of the Hoar Father so you can delete that for your next playthrough.
