Description

Disclaimer: There are some similar mods to this one. (See Compatibility section) But I'm keeping my mod up for reference's sake and for people to make the decision which one they want to use.

There are several Creation Club Creations that add new crossbows and/or bolts. Unfortunately none of them are properly integrated and actually make the Dawnguard quest, Ancient Technology, to seek out hidden crossbow schematics to be useless.

  • Rare Curios: Adds new bolts that can be acquired or crafted by joining the Dawnguard, but don't require completion of Ancient Technology.
  • Elite Crossbows: Adds 2 new types of crossbows and a shortcut quest involving a Vampire Hunter. But again, it doesn't require any completion of Ancient Technology, while the crossbows from this Creation are actually better than those from Dawnguard.
  • Expanded Crossbow Pack: This one adds the most crossbows but is integrated the worst. All new crossbows are just available from level 1, at the Solitude Fletcher. They are vastly superior to the ones from Dawnguard, removing any reason to actually do Ancient Technology.

I made the following changes to adress this:

  • Any new crossbows and bolts are no longer obtainable in the world, nor craftable, from the start of the game.
  • After you have completed all the quests from Ancient Technology, a courier will hand you a letter that will start the quest from Elite Crossbows (which I renamed to "The Forgotten Crossbows")
  • The Vampire hunter's hideout has been redecorated a bit to reflect these changes. Inside you'll find a schematic, which you can bring to Sorine.
  • The hideout will also have a map which contains flags at many important locations for dawnguard, for some additional immersion.
  • After bringing it to Sorine, you'll be able to craft the new bolts and crossbows (given you have the correspodning smithing requirements) and buy them at Sorine and Gunmar. (This might require an inventory reset to trigger.)
  • After you also finished the Dawnguard questline (Kindred Judgment), and a few days have passed Sorine will send you a letter through a courier. The letters will say that Sorine sold copies of the schematics to several faction in Skyrim. As such, crossbows will be used by severeal NPCs and sold by fletchers and blacksmiths.
  • Enhanced Crossbows and Explosive Bolts will remain exclusive for the dawnguard though and won't show up in the world.

This mod has a main file, that deals with the crafting and the quests, and 2 different ways to distribute the crossbows and bolts. You'll need to pick only 1 of these 2 options:

  • Manual distribution: makes manual edits to NPCs and containers. Less compatible, but doesn't require any SKSE DLLs. Does require USSEP.
  • SPID/Skypatcher distribution: requires these tools, but is far more compatible. Doesn't require USSEP.

Requirements

  • USSEP -> Manual distribution.
  • SPID -> SPID/SkyPatcher distribution.
  • Skypatcher -> SPID/SkyPatcher distribution.

Compatibility

I made patches for the following mods:

Other mods that distribute crossbows might be incompatible, but only narratively.
The manual distribution file will be incompatible with a lot of mods that edit the same NPCs.

This mod is very similar to Thwack and Kachunk.

Known Issues

During testing, the leveled lists sometimes did some strange stuff, like giving NPCs the same combinations of crossbows and bolts. I was unable to replicate this though, so it may just have been RNG.

FAQ

Q: Why do you use SPID and SkyPatcher? Could you just use SkyPatcher on its own, or SPID + CID?
A: I tried, but those combinations didn't provide the options I wanted. As such, this combination ended up the most reliable way

Q: ESPFE?
A: Yes.

Q: Does installing/updating/uninstalling on an existing save work?
A: For the best results, I recommend a new save.

If you already had 3 CC creations (ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl, ccbgssse043-crosselv.esl and ccffbsse002-crossbowpack.esl) active, you may get around this by doing the following ("clean save" method):
1. Make a backup save, in case things go awry.
2. Exit the game.
3. Uninstall the 3 CC plugins (ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl, ccbgssse043-crosselv.esl and ccffbsse002-crossbowpack.esl).
4. Go back in game with 3 CC plugins (ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl, ccbgssse043-crosselv.esl and ccffbsse002-crossbowpack.esl) uninstalled.
5. Make a save.
6. Exit game.
7. Clean the save you made in step 5, using Fallrim Tools. (If uncertain how, please look up some guides.)
8. Go back in game and load the cleaned save.
9. Wait about a minute for the scripts to properly update.
10. Make another save.
11. Exit the game.
12. Reinstall 3 CC plugins (ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl, ccbgssse043-crosselv.esl and ccffbsse002-crossbowpack.esl) + install my mod.
13. Load the save made in step 10.
14. Profit?

Q: Is this compatible with <insert mod>?
A: I don't know by heart. You might need to check yourself.

Q: Will you make a patch for <insert mod>?
A: Only if it's a mod I use myself or plan on using it, I have enough time and I actually like the idea. Otherwise, feel free to do it yourself. (see permissions)

Q: I have a suggestion to improve the mod. Can you do it?
A: Maybe, if I have time and I like the idea, I'll consider it.

Q: Will you port this to <insert platform>?
A: No, I myself only support the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If someone else wants to port it, feel free. (see permission) If you decide to port it, you yourself take full responsibility to offer support to said port. I will not provide no support for any ports by third parties.

Q: I use a ported version of this mod on <insert platform> and I have a problem. Can you help?
A: I don't provide any support for third party ports on other platforms than the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If you have issues, you should adress the person that ported it.

Q: Does this work on Skyrim 1.6+, aka "Anniversary Edition"?
A: Yes, it should.

Q: Why don't your mods use MCMs and instead use this janky console command system to set globals?
A: I am not a fan of MCMs. You can set the globals by making a patch in xEdit. I have no plans of changing this. If you want to add an MCM, feel free. (see permissions)

Q: Why don't you use FOMODs?
A: That would require reuploading the entire mod, in question, even if I only make a small change. My internet is limited and reuploading the files each time will take a huge chunk of my monthly volume.
