This mod replaces the exploration, dungeon, and (most of) the city music with music by Nyghttones for a darker atmosphere.

Just to emphasize this again, I am not the creator of the music used in this mod. I have only edited these songs and ported them to Starfield.

What This Mod Replaces:
  • Every exploration track for every biome type (Desert, Forest, Frozen, Hills, Mountains, Ocean, Space, Volcanic).
  • All dungeon tracks (Caves, Industrial).
  • Most city tracks (Cydonia, Neon, New Atlantis, The Well).
  • Most combat tracks.

Installation:
  • Download one or both of the files. They do not require each other, so it's possible to only replace one set of tracks.
  • Install using Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex.
  • Make sure to enable the .esm's that come with each file.

Future Plans:

  • Combat music. Replacing the combat music seems attainable, but will require more time to learn how the combat music system works in this game and to get things right. Combat music has been implemented. There are quirks I can't currently work around, such as abrupt track changes and occasional overlaps, but fixing these would require further modding support from Bethesda and possibly more knowledge of WWise.
  • Akila's tracks. Again, I have ideas, but the tracks I'm looking to use will require some tinkering and time.

Limitations:
  • I'm one dude armed with Audacity and a limited amount of free time.
  • Nyghttones is gracious enough to release their music under Creative Commons CC BY 3.0 DEED, meaning that I can transform and distribute what they release under that license, which is great. However, I'm not capable of producing tracks myself, and as such am restricted to working with the material available to me.
  • For now, the scope of this project is limited to the usage of tracks by Nyghttones. I enjoy the music they produce, and I feel it fits the theme I'm aiming for with this mod. It also makes it easier logistically for me as I'm not having to deal with multiple authors' music and their licenses. I may seek other authors' music at a later time to produce a different and more comprehensive project, but this is pending further tooling that allows modders to work around the current limitations of audio modding.

Q/A:

What have you changed about the tracks?

All of the tracks have had their perceived loudness normalized to -21 LUFS. This means they should be roughly as loud as vanilla's tracks. Just under half of the tracks have had more individual work done (fixing artifacts, trimming sections I felt would be out of place, etc.). An exact list of changes to each track, as well as a glossary of what track is being used where, is available in the images for this mod or as an optional Excel download.

What do the .esm's do?

The .esm files serves two purposes:
  • The soundtrack contains a significant number of palette/finale tracks. The .esm's disable these palette/finale tracks and replaces them with silence.
  • Enables the three primary space tracks to play everywhere in space by removing the attached record flag.
It is possible to use this mod without the .esm files, but keep in mind that this will allow the vanilla palette/finale tracks to play.

I have feedback I'd like to give.

Feel free. I'm just a hobbyist, and there is plenty to improve. Some tracks would benefit from being balanced or edited to improve their implementation, and I would be grateful for the feedback. With that said, it would be helpful if you provided the biome/area you are in when the relevant track plays to aid in tracking it down, as well as the specific suggestion(s) you have to improve it. I'll do my best to implement feedback, so long as it falls within the scope of the mod and my limited tools.

Housekeeping:
  • If Nyghttones wants to produce their own version of a Starfield music mod, I am happy to hide/remove this mod at their request.
  • There are some tracks I'd love to get my hands on if/when they become available. Space Walk and tracks like it would be really fun for Neon to add some uniqueness to the location.
  • 100% of the Donation Points this mod earns are set to go to Nyghttones.
