What is the difference between groups and categories?

While “groups” in Vortex are meant to resolve conflicts between plugins, “mod categories” help you organise your mods visually.

Groups are designed for conflict resolution in broader strokes than plugin specific rules, for instance, if you have several plugins that need to load before several others. You can assign plugins to groups in the plugin’s details (double-click a plugin in your list to open the details). See: Managing your Load Order for more details regarding how to utilise groups.

Mod categories are meant to help you organise your mods visually. Mods downloaded from Nexus Mods are generally categorised in the same way as they are on the game specific site. You can change the category for a given mod in the mod’s details.
