Installation of GIMP
Overview
GIMP is an acronym for GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed program for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring.
This process will Install GIMP, the DDS Plugin for exporting DDS texture files, and the Normal Map Plugin for generating normal maps.
Installation
Download GIMP, the DDS Plugin, Normal Map Plugin (plugins is made for 2.8.x, but works for 2.10.x)
Install GIMP
- Run the GIMP installer and go through the installation steps (default settings are fine).
Install plugins
Copy the following files to C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\
- dds.exe
- normalmap.exe
Copy the following files to C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\
- glew32.dll
- libgdkglext-win32-1.0-0.dll
- libgtkglext-win32-1.0-0.dll
Using the plugins
To convert to normal map, go to Filters->Map->NormalMap...
To export as DDS, go to File->Export... and in the window that pops up click "Select File Type" and find DDS.
