Item creation and placement

Okay, you just got the Geck, New Vegas version, and you're all ready to go and make some awesome stuff, right? Do you know how? Well, if you don't, maybe this will help.

  1. The first thing you need to do is open the Geck as an administrator. This allows it to save files without asking for permission all the time. Next, you want to open the Fallout New Vegas .esm by double-clicking on it. It is very important to disable the extra packs, like the Caravan Pack or the Classic Pack, before you press okay, so that your mod is compatible across a wide range of installations.
  2. Once you have opened the Fallout New Vegas .esm, and disabled any extra packs you have installed, you make your items. Since weapons are, without a doubt, the most modded items, we'll focus on those. If you want to take the easy route, just find an item that would use the icon of the item you want to make, right-click on it, and choose Edit. This opens a dialog box which contains all the information about that particular item. Change the Editor ID and the Name, and hit OK. Because you changed the ID and Name, the Geck will ask you if you want to create a new form. This bypasses weapon replacement by just creating a new item. Click yes. Now, open the weapon you just "made", and you can edit just about everything about it, from the weight of the item, to what kind of projectile it fires. Be careful, however. Some of the projectiles behave differently, like the fat man projectile, or the Nellis Artillery Shell.
  3. Now, you've got your cool items, but how do you get them to your character? To place them in the world, you need to first create a container to hold them. Again, the easiest way to do this is to edit a container, and give it a new ID and Name, and edit the contents to include your custom items. When you ckick OK, the Geck will once again ask if you want to create a new form. Click yes.
  4. Once you have your container, it's time to place it. Find the window named Cell View. Click the World Space dropdown box, and scroll down to WastelandNV. This opens up a list of worldspaces out in the wasteland, and in various other places. My favorite place is Goodsprings, as it is open, and has plenty of room for addon containers. Now, go back to the Object Window, and find your container, but don't open it. You place items in the wasteland by dragging and dropping them in, so position the view where you want your container to go, and click your container. WITHOUT RELEASING THE MOUSE BUTTON, drag the container into the world, and it will appear. It will take a little practice to get it right, but once you do, you'll be able to place your container anywhere you want it.

I hope this helps, and if you have any questions, drop me a line, and I'll do my best to answer them.
