About this mod

This changes a lot of top-right-corner notifications and messages, plus some other messages. It doesn't just turn them into first-person messages, but makes messages more conversational as well. I also try to extend the length of as many messages as I can, from two to five seconds.

Hello everyone, this is the first time I've actually created a mod with the intent of releasing it. I've dabbled in patchwork and personal adjustments before, but this is my first release project. I hope you dig it and go easy on me if I've made mistakes please, lol.

What I've done is taken as many notifications and messages as I can find in the "Game Settings" and "Message" sections of SF1Edit to customize them to my liking. I know a lot of people prefer the immersion of first person messages in these games, as do I, but I've found most mods on other Bethesda games to be lacking a bit. To enhance the immersion, I've put myself in the shoes of the starborn and tried to surmise what they would actually be saying in their inner monologue. This can sometimes be difficult when working within the confines of a video game, as you're restricted to the controls and inputs, but I've tried my best.

For example, instead of changing "You cannot sleep in this location." to "I cannot sleep in this location." like most mods of this ilk would do, I've instead changed it to "I don't think I should sleep here." Hard to imagine me ever saying to myself "I cannot sleep in this location." but it's much easier to believe in my replacement.

The side effect of this immersion is that sometimes important game information can be lost from the notification. I've tried to avoid overwriting really important data, but to give you an example of one I've replaced, I've changed the message "Barrett can't be dismissed until "Worlds Apart" is complete." to "I should keep Barrett around, at least until we finish this path." You're no longer told the exact quest you have to finish to dismiss Barrett again, but I think the information given should be enough for you to figure it out on your own. If this seems to be an issue, I can try to go back through and fix ones like this.

In addition to making the actual "conversational first person" adjustments, I've tried to extend the length of as many messages as I can. A lot of messaging in the "Message" category of SF1Edit has a field called Display Time in which the setting is 2, presumably 2 seconds. I've adjust all of these to 5 to hopefully extend it to five seconds, but I haven't tested this extensively. I also know that using faster UI files, such as those from 120 FPS, can shorten these messages even more. Plus, any messages in the "Game Setting" section, where a lot of the quick notifications are, can't be changed unfortunately. If anyone knows a way to extend the length of these messages please let me know, otherwise they'll be stuck until a way becomes possible.

For now, I've skipped tutorial and help style messages as I think it's easy to explain these as reading a manual or something, and it's harder to slip "press spacebar" into an inner monologue. If there's enough interest in these being changed as well, I'll work on releasing it as an add-on as soon as I can. If not, I'll still likely get to it eventually, but will be focusing on patches and other stuff in the meantime.

Speaking of patches, that's another thing I've noticed some of these mods fail to do. They touch the vanilla game's records, but don't come back to release add-ons for popular mods that also add messages and notifications. I intend to do that for any mods I use myself, and if there are popular enough mods out there being requested in the comments I'll try to tackle those as well (as long as it's within permissions to do so). I've included one quick and easy one as an example.

Alright, that should be enough of my rambling. Please let me know if you notice any typos, any messages/notifications I've missed, have any suggestions or issues, et cetera. Excited to hear your feedback.

Compatibility
It would seem this is currently incompatible with Starfiedl. I haven't yet had time to investigate myself, as soon as I do I'll update here and create a patch if possible.

Patches have been created for the following mods:

Installation
I'm one of those heathens that installs stuff manually, so if I need to do something different for Vortex or MO2 users to download the mod please let me know. Otherwise, just install it as you would any ESM plugin.

  • Make sure to download, install and setup Plugins.txt Enabler according to its instructions.
  • Then download and install this mod (drag the data folder into your root Starfield folder where your game's exe is.)
  • Open your Plugins.txt file and add any of my plugins' filenames to the list wherever you want them to be. Make sure to save the file after.
